On Monday November 25th, I had the pleasure of meeting, in the context of a Nexus Demo, Dr. <\/a>Nicolas Mirouze<\/a>, head of the team \u201cHorizontal Gene Transfer in pathogenic bacteria: from old to new model organisms\u201d at Institut de Biologie Int\u00e9grative de la Cellule – I2BC –<\/a>.

The Nexus is Revvity<\/a>\u2019s latest high-throughput and most sensitive multimode plate reader. It\u2019s demo consists of a theoretical part (presentation of the characteristics of the Nexus), and a practical part facing the instrument (user interface, configuration, creation and editing of protocols, management of optics, visualization and export of results …etc).

The demo was also the opportunity for me to discover and understand the team\u2019s research project. Dr. Nicolas Mirouze and two of the lab\u2019s PhD students <\/a>Pierre Poirette<\/a> and Yannis ARAB, kindly explained to me how they use Ultra-sensitive Luminescence to investigate the underlying processes of Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT).
HGT, defined as the transmission of genetic material between organisms that are not in a parent-offspring relationship. A process that enables bacteria to adapt to evolving environments often resulted from the acquisition of new genes, and therefore new functions.
