🎓 I’m happy to share that I have successfully completed the Train the Trainer for Instructors training, which took place on October 12th at Revvity’s Oxford facility, earning my learning certificate!
What made this training stand out? It wasn’t the kind of training where you sit back, listen to generic advice, and leave with a notebook full of formulas. It was practical, interactive, and focused on learning by doing.
Among the activities, we were asked to deliver a short presentation on a topic of our choice and receive feedback from both the instructors and our peers. I chose to challenge myself with a presentation entitled “Learn How to Use Your Feet” — without PowerPoint slides or any visual aids to guide me! 👣
The feedback was positive, which boosted my confidence and reassured me that my presentation skills are heading in the right direction. One particularly useful suggestion was that visual aids could have complemented the physical demonstrations I used.
I took that feedback on board for our second presentation, in which we had to tell a story. My choice? The story of how I became a leg expert! 😂 This time, I incorporated photos and graphic illustrations to bring the story to life.
🎭 One of my favourite parts was the role-playing. In one exercise, I had to manage a disruptive trainee who interrupted others, used their phone during the session, and asked irrelevant questions. Surprisingly, playing the instructor trying to manage the situation diplomatically was much harder than playing the disruptive trainee! 😅 It was a great opportunity to practise staying composed, maintaining a positive atmosphere, and keeping the session on track without embarrassing anyone.
A big thank you to Vinny Maharaj and Mark Zofcak for the quality of the training, their kindness, and their enthusiasm throughout the programme.
It’s always rewarding to step outside your comfort zone, learn from others, and come away with practical skills. Here are a few takeaways I’ll be putting into practice:
🔹 Preparation is key : Arrive early to set up the room, test the internet connection, familiarise yourself with the audio/video system, and arrange the seating to suit the session. Small details can make a big difference to an instructor’s credibility and, consequently, their impact throughout the training.
🔹 Set the ground rules : Establish expectations from the start: phones on silent, how and when to ask questions, and when to take coffee breaks. Clear expectations help create a more focused and productive learning environment.
🔹 Feed back is essential : Rather than sending a feedback request by email later, set aside time at the end of the training session to collect trainees’ immediate impressions while the experience is still fresh in their minds.
Looking forward to putting these lessons into practice in my future training sessions for Revvity customers !
